I. Understanding the human spirit, soul and heart

The spirit, soul and heart are different. (1 Thessalonians 5:23; Hebrews 4:12)

    A. The human spirit
        1. It appears that the human spirit is made in the image of God, with seven facets: Prophet, Servant, Teacher, Exhorter, Giver, Ruler and Mercy. (Genesis 1:26-27; Romans 12:6-8; Revelation 1:4, 3:1)*
Jesus is called the image of God, and we are called the likeness and image of God. (Colossians 1:15; James 3:9; Romans 8:29)
Jesus is described in Revelation as the slain Lamb who has seven horns and seven eyes which are the seven Spirits of God. (Revelation 5:6)

        2. Acts as a searchlight. The human spirit is described as the search light (lamp, candle) of the Lord and has the ability to search out our inward being in the same way that the Holy Spirit searches out even the depths of God. (Proverbs 20:27; 1 Corinthians 2:10-11)

        3. Eternal. Unlike the soul which comes into being when spirit is placed within matter, it appears that the human spirit is eternal. Perhaps even drawn from the Spirit of God when he breathed life into man. (Genesis 2:7; Ecclesiastes 12:7)

        4. The human spirit can be overwhelmed, crushed and broken. (Psalm 34:17-18; Psalm 142:3-4; Proverbs 17:22; Proverbs 18:14)

    B. The human soul
        1. Created in time.
Perhaps the soul comes into existence when the spirit is placed in the body. (Genesis 2:7) If this is accurate, then the soul is temporal (natural), born into time, unable to intuitively understand eternity, and can be destroyed. (1 Corinthians 2:12; Matthew 10:28)

        2. Requires salvation. The soul must be won or saved. It can be lost. (Matthew 16:26; Hebrews 10:39; 1 Peter 1:8-9)

        3. Must be trained. Because the human soul is a new creation, it must be trained to serve and worship the Lord. (Psalm 103:1-5)
It appears that the soul is a child, requiring comfort and protection. (Psalm 63:8; Psalm 131:5) It has to be taught to be quiet. (Psalm 62:5 NAS)
I believe it is the human spirit’s desire to train, instruct, nurture and mature the human soul. And I believe that the spirit is fully equipped and positioned by God to accomplish this task. (Ephesians 1:3; Ephesians 2:6)

    C. The human heart
        1. The mouth speaks from what fills the heart. (Luke 6:45)
        2. The heart responds to grace. (Hebrews 13:9)
        3. The issues of life flow from the heart. (Proverbs 4:23) It is secretive and deep. (Psalm 64:6; Psalm 44:21) It has its own opinions and emotions. (Hebrews 4:12; Psalm 13:2)
        4. We believe with the heart, and the heart believes what it feels. (Romans 10:10)
It appears that most of us fall while we are in the womb because we believe a lie about God. This lie appears to be the result of “feeling” abandoned and betrayed by God. We “feel” this when we first enter the atmosphere of sin and experience the presence of the evil one. (Ephesians 2:2) Because the heart believes what it feels, we believe that God has hurt us. Only Jesus managed to navigate the womb without falling into sin, but in order for him to be our high priest he had to be tempted in all ways that we are tempted, so he “felt” abandoned on the cross when he became our sin, but, unlike us, he did not believe that what he felt in his heart was the truth. Therefore, he did not fall. (Matthew 27:46; Luke 23:46; Hebrews 4:15)

        5. The heart breaks, and it requires healing. (Psalm 34:17; Isaiah 61:1; Psalm 147:3)

        6. While we train our souls to be silent, we must encourage our hearts to speak to the Lord. (Psalm 62:8)

NOTE: The heart thinks in general categories. For example: mother, father, sister, brother, men, women, them, they. To the heart, it is all or nothing. For example: all, always, never, no one, every time, ever again.

It is absolutely vital that we bring what we believe in our hearts into the light, then apply the truth of scripture.

*See Inner Healing Level I for more in-depth teaching on this subject.

II. What disconnects the human spirit from the soul

    A. Lies, judgments and vows -
What we believe in our hearts is our reality regardless of the accuracy of our perceptions. (Proverbs 27:19; Proverbs 23:7 Amplified; Matthew 5:8)
        1. The heart believes what it feels which usually means that we believe a lie.
        2. The soul attempts to understand or contain that lie by making a judgment.
For example, when first placed in the womb, the atmosphere of darkness makes us feel awful. We “feel” that God abandoned us. In an effort to manage the pain of what we feel, we make judgments. These judgments are based on what we feel, not on truth. We might decide that we’re getting what we deserve because we are bad. Or that we never should have trusted God in the first place because He is bad.
All the fledging soul knows is that it hurts really badly, so in an effort to make it stop hurting the soul makes promises to itself. We call these promises inner vows.
For example, I decide that I will “never” trust “anyone” “ever again” or I will “always” be very, very good, so I won’t “ever again” be abandoned.
Evil spirits attach to our inner vows to reinforce them.
Ideally, the soul is to wait on the Lord for healing and deliverance. (Psalm 33:20; Psalm 41:4)
        3. Every judgment and vow has the potential to sever the connection between the spirit and the soul.
For example: the vow to  “never trust again” prevents the soul from trusting the spirit. Or the promise made to be very very good in order to avoid being abandoned stops the spirit from teaching us to rest and receive. Until these issues are exposed and healed, much of our Christian service comes out of a motive of fear. (1 Corinthians 4:5)

    B. The enemy
        1. It appears that an abuser can transfer an evil spirit onto his victim at the moment of trauma. Different portions of the spirit nurture the child through different developmental stages and activities. The portion that is nurturing the child at the time of the trauma seems to be the one most affected.

    C. Generational issues
Inherited generational issues appear to have the power to disqualify a portion of the human spirit from engaging with the other portions and with the soul.
    D. Disorder among the spirit portions
I have found on several occasions a disorder or misunderstanding between two portions of the human spirit. This appears to be more likely to happen when only two or three portions of the spirit are able to interact with soul. The rest are shut out for one reason or another.
If two of the portions are in conflict about how to go about something - for example, how to raise a child - this will result in disorder and conflict between them. It appears that each portion is designed by God to only fulfill it’s particular function. Therefore, every portion is needed to bring balance to the whole.

    E. Divorce
In one instance, a young man had split himself in two in order to be with both parents. It appeared that some portions of his spirit were with the father and some with the mother.
The child made vows to be with both parents. So again we circle back to judgments and vows.

Practical Guidelines For Ministry To The Heart And Soul
With The Help of The Human Spirit

I. Ask the human spirit to engage with you.
I say, “Spirit, would you please engage with me?”

II. I use the structure already in place.
I start with prophet. I ask prophet what is keeping him from doing his job. I listen and discern as does the person I’m praying with. (Portions may be male or female in gender.)
    Here’s how we discern:
        1. We see things.
        2. We hear things.
        3. We feel things.
        4. We get impressions. (Most common)
        5. We just know.

Remember we see in part, so do not discard the stuff you don’t understand. Ask questions. Press into what you are discerning. Do not discard impressions. Press into the impressions. Do not discount feelings. The spirit will take you were you need to go every time. If the person goes into a dark place, most likely, they will report that they are seeing nothing. Ask about the quality of the nothing. Ask them to interact with the nothing. What color is it? What does it feel like? etc.

III. What the spirit reveals.
    A. Inner healing issues: What the heart believes, judgments, vows.

    B. The presence of the demonic. A portion will be defiled.
        1. Ask the holy ones to remove the demonic and wash the portion.
        2. Invite the other portions to restore the previously defiled portion.

    C. Generational defilement.

    D. A misunderstanding among the portions of the spirit likely the result of having only a few of the portions functioning. This appears to happen when the portions are attempting to accomplish something and believe that they are at odds.

    E. Parts of the person scattered around due to divorce or a traumatic move.
    F. The overall condition of the human spirit.

IV. How the spirit reveals a problem.

    A. In many cases the spirit will reveal a memory.

How memory recall works - This is taken from Deep Wounds, Deep Healing by Dr. Charles Kraft.

Memory recall does not work the same for everyone or the same way every time. Relax. Be flexible and recognize that God is creative. Always be encouraging. There is not a single right way. It is ok to make a mistake. Be willing to backtrack and try different approaches.

    1. Graphic recall: Crystal clear memory pictures.

    2. Hazy impressions: faint but plainly discernible images that tend to become clearer when focused upon.

    3. Strong impressions: Body sensations such as changes in breathing or sensations of tightness, tension, pressure or pain in the head or other areas, dizziness or sensations of movement; emotional responses such as anxiety, fear, panic`, crying, anger; smelling fragrances or odors, hearing sounds or voices. These can be very strong.

    4. Medley: Any combination of the above.

    5. Nonvisual, nonsensory impression: the person simply knows what happened, even without pictures or feeling. Sometimes this is due to repressed memory/emotions and may mean the person is not as fully involved as he or she needs to be to work toward healing in this particular area. Might be wise to work in another area and return here another time.

        a. Work through the memory until the person is sure of what she believed in the memory about herself, others, life and God.
        b. Then ask the spirit what the person chose to do to protect herself from the pain of what she believed. That will be the inner vow. Inner vows prevent the spirit from ministering to the soul. Follow standard repentance guidelines for bitter root judgments and inner vows.
        c. Send evil “helpers” to the feet of Jesus. Say “I send all evil helpers to the feet of Jesus for judgment.”

    B. Pictures.
Often the spirit will show the person a picture that symbolizes what the person believes. Usually the picture will change into a memory.
        1. Persons: I have never seen the human spirit as anything other than an adult. When you are given a picture of a child, that is a picture of the soul, not of the spirit.
        2. Places: Darkness, nothingness, colors, boxes, tunnels, curtains, mist ... all are pictures that represent what the soul believes. They need to be explored.

    C. Feelings.
Feelings may surface for no apparent reason. Remind the person to tune into and report what they are feeling. Sometimes the spirit will reveal the state of the person through how they feel: hopeless, restless, fearful, that it is just too hard. Or they may feel choked or trapped. Explore this.

    D. Generational problems.
Ask the spirit if the problem is generational. Sometimes the sense is that the problem goes “way back” or is “very deep.” Sometimes the spirit will show the person a picture of a tree. You’ll develop a feel for this over time.

    E. The overall condition of the human spirit.

V. Continue to ask prophet what else is interfering.
At some point, the prophet portion will give you an all clear. This may take several prayer sessions. Be patient.

VI. Once you have an all clear, pray like this:
“Holy Ones, please come and wash prophet clean of all evil residue. Remove all evil devices, restore all that has been stolen. Please connect prophet to the soul, turn on all the lights and switches.”

VII. Bless the prophet and proceed to the next portion.
